What is 3D art and how do you learn to become a 3D artist?

3D art is all about height, width and depth. It is not flat like two-dimensional art, which consists of paintings, drawings and photographs.

It can be 3D wall art, 3D wall decor, 3D moving art, 3D moving wall art, 3D floor art, 3D sculptures, 3D pottery etc. "Form" is a term used to describe 3D artwork. Forms can be geometric or organic.

3D art has volume, which is the amount of space occupied by the form. The form also has mass, which means that the volume is solid and occupies space. 3D art design is comprised of three main elements: balance, proportion and rhythm. Balance denotes visual balance, not the actual ability to stand upright. Proportion refers to the various parts of the 3D object. The parts need to give the appearance of belonging together. Rhythm is the repetition of line or shape within the overall form.

Do you want to be a 3D artist and if so, how do you learn to do it?

Anyone can have a go but to work professionally one really needs to be good at drawing and sketching. You need an eye for detail, have imagination, be extremely resourceful, self-sufficient and have a thick skin to ward off criticism.  Knowledge of I.T., computers and digital graphics would be an advantage.

You can see what it takes on Animation Arena's Introdcution To 3D Art page.

Some 3D artists have expressed this genre on the streets, a type of graffiti. Whether it’s in chalk or paint, on walls or the street, it represents a new way of combining the mastery of Renaissance art techniques with the gritty, ephemeral qualities of amazing street art. These 3D street artists give graffiti a whole new meaning, a sort of respectability, because they are so good.

Artists like Kurt Wenner, Eduardo Relero and Tracy Lee Stum create street art that is so incredible it is almost impossible to pass by without being sucked in to the worlds they create on asphalt and concrete surfaces. You can see examples from sidewalk sketches to awesome wall murals on weburbanist.com.
