Rochdale Town Centre Murals look ‘Brilliant’

Street artists from Europe and the United Kingdom have given Rochdale Town Centre a large wall art mural makeover. The ‘Rochdale Uprising’ August Bank Holiday event (22nd to 26th August) was the inspiration of Rochdale-born artist Hayley Garner, one half of mural duo Nomad Clan.

The twelve wall murals have been painted on well-known landmark buildings throughout the city centre.

Hayley Garner explains that ...

“One of the core motives for running a mural festival in Rochdale is to inspire and engage the young people through direct visual action” ... “Rochdale’s famed pioneering spirit, heritage and people deserve to be celebrated in a vibrant and fitting way.”

The murals are dotted around the town, all within an easy walk from one another.

Here are the titles of each artwork (the artist’s name) and their exact location in the city centre:

1. Positivity & This One (London Police) – Drake Street / Nelson Street

2. Young People Route Map of Positivity (Billy) – Champness Hall, Drake Street

3. Girls to the Front (Folie aka Cookie Love) – Volta Lab Studios

4. Homage to Town’s Cotton weaving (Philth) – Water Street

5. LOL (Penfold) – The Walk / The Butts

6. The Walk (Lei Mai) – The Walk / Yorkshire Street

7. The Seven Sisters (Tea One) – The Baum / Yorkshire Street

8. The Daisies (Tasha Whittle) – Rochdale Pioneers Museum / Toad Lane

9. Pansies (Northern Line & Dirty Face – Alley by Poundworld

10. A Giant Rooster (Curtis Hylton) – Baillie Street

11.  A tribute to the women of the cotton weaving industry (Tankpetrol) – Shopping Complex Building

12. The Story of Rochdale’s Industrial Growth (Nomad Clan) – Regal (Cinema) Moon Pub wall, Church Lane

The primary aim for the first edition of Rochdale Uprising was to breathe life back into unloved and neglected parts of the town through a series of iconic murals, showcasing local and internationally renowned artistic talent as well as some of the diverse networks of creative organisations in and around Rochdale and Greater Manchester.

The festival was a great success leaving an important lasting artistic legacy for the town.

The Manchester Evening News reported on the 27th August that...

“These huge murals have been painted all over Rochdale town centre and they look brilliant”
