Morecambe and Wise – Masters of their Art…

Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise were probably the best British comedy double act of all time.

Today, their influence on British comedy remains as strong. The Morecombe and Wise performances will forever be imprinted on the minds of generations of British TV viewers, with their iconic seventies shows that the "A" list celebrities of the time were queuing up to get on their BBC (and then ITV) programmes. There was Andre Previn, Glenda Jackson, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and who can forget Angela Rippon’s legs. They produced classic, family friendly shows that were actually funny, inventive and entertaining.

Christmas certainly was not complete without their Christmas specials...

Eric & Ernie were not just comedians; they were sophisticated show-business personalities. They didn't just tell jokes, they were performing clowns who could sing. Their humour was harmless, nobody was insulted and there was no foul language. When Morecombe and Wise passed into history, something irreplaceable was lost forever.

'Bring me sunshine'…that's exactly what they did.

Next year, in the summer of 2016, it is planned to reunite Eric and Ernie in Morecambe, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the formation of their double act in 1941. As part of a private fundraising initiative led by businessman Jim Cadman and supported by Lancaster City Council, a 10 foot Bronze Wall Art of Morecambe and Wise will be the star feature in a newly created Sunshine Garden of Fame on Morecambe Promenade opposite The Winter Gardens Theatre.

This is not comedy wall art, to the contrary, this is a serious business. This Metal Wall Art will be the work of sculptor Graham Ibbeson who created the iconic statue of Eric Morecambe that has attracted over a million visitors to the town since its unveiling by the Queen in 1999.
