Living Plants Wall Art - You can't be serious?

A fascinating development over the past 20 years in wall art, is creating a large living wall or even a wall-mounted picture or canvas, of living plants.

These are becoming a new trend for home owners or larger leisure, commercial and retail organisations. You may have even noticed the living walls recently at the premier tennis Championships, Wimbledon.

Apart from living walls, living plants can be cleverly arranged into small picture framed works of art and hung on walls. Mmmmmm, how does that work then? Surely the basic laws of gravity make this impossible. On the contrary, adept techniques have been developed to prevent the growing medium compound falling out of the frame and methods to keep plants well-watered and healthy. Sensible plant selection and regular fine pruning is crucial to the success of this astonishing living wall art.

Want to try your hand at this new creative form of domestic wall art? This Youtube video will show you how:

Are living walls a recent phenomenon or similar to many things, a re-invention of the past? Well, the ‘Good Earth Plant’ company in the United States has been creating living walls for the past 40 years.

‘Good Earth’ says that Living walls have been around since the ‘Hanging Gardens of Babylon’ created in the early 600’s BC. The concept has evolved, over the years, known as green walls, vertical gardens, plant walls and vegetated walls. Botanical artist Patrick Blanc’s exceptional work in primarily France and Spain has brought this new planting surface out of somewhat obscurity into the mainstream and it is gaining popularity quickly.

The simplest living wall is a plant-like ivy growing up the side of a building. The next step up is an engineered trellis system where plants are rooted in the ground, climbing up a structure separate from the building. This system allows for more variety and options. The most complex living walls systems all include four elements: growing media, structural support, integrated irrigation and a drainage system.

Living walls can exist inside with proper lighting, or outside in almost any climate. They can be planted randomly or have intricate patterns. Living walls or green walls can be self-sustaining with a recirculating irrigation system, hard piped with drip irrigation and a drain, or watered by hand.

If you plant a living wall it produces tremendous benefits, ‘Good Earth’ lists these as:

  • Aesthetic beauty
  • Overall well-being and happiness
  • Natural air filtration through bio-filtration walls
  • Removal of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Conserving energy by shading and insulating the building envelope
  • Creating biodiversity conservation opportunities
  • Absorbing and filtering stormwater and greywater
  • Filtering air particulates
  • Sound absorption
  • Thermal regulation
  • Reduced occupant stress
  • In hospital settings, patients recover more quickly, use less pain medication and complain less
  • Interior plants clean the air in your office or home
  • Interior plants add humidity to the air when you have your central heating on in the winter

Did you watch the men’s Wimbledon tennis final...Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer? What a brilliant final...five sets...12:12 in the final set, with Djokovic winning the tie break. It was interesting that a BBC presenter during one of the end of set breaks referred to the living walls being developed at Wimbledon. There are two walls, spanning 245 sq m and created with 14,344 plants stand on the redeveloped No 1 court and either side of the big screen on Henman Hill.

Martyn Falconer, head gardener at the All England Club, said players had already been commenting on, “how amazing it is and how peaceful it makes the grounds feel because it’s so green and colourful...If they feel like they need more to make them less stressful, we can add more – there’s always room for more.”

The living wall employs state-of-the-art technology, which means it is automatically irrigated and generates a text message if there is a fault with the hydroponic system.

Brilliant Wall Art is a company that sell fabulous wall art, but unfortunately, none of it is living. However, the quality and authenticity of the products sometimes may fool you. For example, examine this Autumn Leaf Branch metal wall art. It has an elegant leaf design finished in rustic colour tones. It is easy to hang and measures approximately 58cm (23") high x 102cm (40") wide. Our version of botanical art.

There are also many other awesome garden products on offer at Brilliant Wall Art. Look for weather vanes, garden furniture, bird feeders, arches, lamps, plant stands, watering cans, water features, garden spinners and even a sheep!

My favourite is the Galloping Horse garden weathervane. It is constructed from high-grade stainless steel so will not rust and prevents the need to work at height to maintain the product. It is an elegant and attractive statement piece.
