History of Wall Art Part Two - The Egyptians

Cave paintings may have been the first examples of wall art, but amongst the finest are those, created by the ancient Egyptians.

The civilisation of Ancient Egypt was located in the lower Nile Valley from about 3000 BC to 100 AD. Their fine art reached a high level in painting, which was both highly stylised and symbolic. Much of the surviving art comes from tombs and monuments and thus there is an emphasis on life after death and the preservation of knowledge of the past.

Wall art was exclusive to the pharaoh, rich citizens, and temples and of course tombs.

Why was wall art so important? Similar to cavemen hunters, but this time royal, rich and powerful Egyptians wanted to convey their greatness, for all to see. Ramesses the Great recorded his success at the battle of Qadesh in a huge mural, leaving his enemies with no doubt about his strength.

Egyptian paintings are painted in such a way to show a frontal profile view and a side view of the animal or person at the same time. This is most noticeable with heads, where the single eye is prominent. They enjoyed nature inspired wall art. Their main colours were red, blue, green, gold, black and yellow.
