History of Wall Art Part Six – Graffiti Art

Wall art in the form of graffiti, has been with us as a type of personal artistic expression and communication throughout the ages.

However, since the 1960’s it has taken on exciting new populist ‘street art’ dimension, which some consider vandalism.

Would ancient cave painters be considered vandals drawing on graffiti walls today? Is tagging a throw back to a primeval need to say…look what I’ve done, similar to the bragging rights of the primitive hunter? Surely it’s only personalised wall art?

What is your opinion…is graffiti, vandalism or modern wall art?

We all appreciate a nice picture. Modern graffiti art originated in New York City, and it was known first as "New York Style" graffiti. This art form began in the late 1960's when teens used permanent markers to tag or write their names, followed by the number of the street on which they lived, in subway cars.

The advent of spray-paint allowed tags to develop in size and colour. It was not enough just to have one's name scrawled over any available and visible surface because everyone was doing this. The main problem with graffiti art is it means so much to the artist and little to the casual onlooker. The spray can separated the taggers from the artists in that colour, form, and style could be emphasized creatively with this new tool to produce tags as a part of an overall artistic production.

The epiphany of this movement was when graffiti was created to provoke an emotional response…that was when it became an art form. The godfather of stencil graffiti art is the Frenchman Blek Le Rat, who worked on the streets of Paris. His pieces were often painted with an underlying social conscience such as his man that walks through walls.

Banksy wall art, is a contemporary example of the art form. Banksy, a Bristol based exponent of personalised wall art, was influenced by Blek Le Rat. His graffiti wall art is thought provoking and often carry complex social issues in simple to understand images.
