Autumn is the season of transition from summer to winter. It is the bringing in of the harvest, food to sustain us in preparation for the barren, harsh, winter weather ahead.
Days shorten, darkness prevails, the natural world appears to wither and die. However, does Autumn really symbolise darkness, death and evil?
Well yes it can do, however Autumn is also the season of new beginnings, light, life, hope, new learning, restoration and religious renewal.
There are many religions and cultures which celebrate the symbolism of Autumn. Japanese celebrate the Autumn equinox in a festival named Shubun No Hi, Christians the Harvest Festival, the Celts celebrate Samhain, in the western world Halloween, and Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate the Diwali festival, the Festival of light.
The Diwali festival is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The actual day of Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the festival's third day, which this year falls on Sunday, 30th October. The timing of the festival is decided upon by the Hindu lunar calendar. While each faith has its own reason to celebrate the festival, one of the most popular stories told is the legend of Lord Rama and his wife Sita returning to their kingdom in northern India from exile after defeating the demon king Ravanna in the 15th century BC.
Longleat Safari and Adventure Park is hosting the Longleat Festival of Light on selected dates from 11th November 2016 to the 2nd January 2017. Longleat in Wiltshire, England, was opened in 1966 as the first drive-through safari park outside Africa. The park is situated in the grounds of Longleat House, an English stately home which is open to the public and is the home of the 7th Marquess of Bath. Today, Longleat is home to over 500 animals, and the estate occupies 9,000 acres.
This autumn and winter the unmissable Longleat Festival of Light returns, transforming the park into a glowing winter wonderland. This year the event will include Europe’s largest Chinese Lantern Festival and will be a celebration of all creatures great and small. It is the Safari Park’s 50th anniversary and with some help from the beloved characters of Beatrix Potter, animal stars will be taking centre-stage as Longleat lights up the Wiltshire countryside.
