Loft living helped to establish industrial furniture and décor as the chic, must have, style of the latter part of the 20th Century.

This industrial style décor is a blend of raw exposed modern metals, glasses, cements, rustic wood etc., which can contrast and complement softer, more traditional, country, modernist or minimalist styles.
However, to achieve this aesthetic balance you need to be careful, simultaneously blending organic and engineered, masculine and feminine, being bold, whilst remaining refined.
Complicated? Difficult? Perhaps…however, it’s great fun achieving this eclectic look in your suburban home and it will definitely WOW your friends and family!

So how can you add the industrial look to your space?
Here are some pointers to help you design an industrial style home with some inspirational ideas and advice to help you to get started.

  • Materials

Natural materials are essential to industrial style. Metal in the form of iron and steel must never be shiny. Metal must always be matte gray and simple in concept and design. Glass works well with the metals and wood. It opens up the space and adds a touch of glamour. Dark coloured bricks particularly in red, brown blue, give definition and form. However, one of the most used materials in the industrial style is cement. Keep cement for accents and accessories, don’t overdo it.

  • Furniture

Straight lines on all furniture is a must. Legs must be classic and true, often in metal, but woods look good if dark and distressed. Look at storage cabinets, metal cabinets, industrial desks, industrial tables, industrial storage units, industrial stools, benches, shelves, coat hooks etc. Sofas need to be in leather or suede, also usually distressed. Bookcases with open shelves are cool.
Furniture must always look easy, natural, worn and look lived in. Brilliant Wall Art stock many ideal statement pieces of furniture, at BRILLIANT PRICES…

  •  Lighting

Industrial lighting is crucial to the vintage industrial furniture look. Industrial lighting should consist of basic clear glass, classic geometrics, white pristine lamp shades, fuss free bases, with trademark metals.

  • Wall Hangings

Beyond clocks, adding the industrial look to your walls can be fun. Signs work well. If you can find vintage signs or advertising signs, all the better, but modern versions are fine. Worded messages work well too. There is a fabulous range of distressed wooden signs which can be found at Brilliant Wall Art. The metallic signs are not bad either…

  • Accessories

Cement accessories are very popular…candleholders, planters and even cement cabinet hardware. The trick is to keep it in balance. Industrial metal or wooden mirrors, photo frames, ornaments or hessian rugs can embellish the look. I personally love the vintage stacking crate wine rack bottle holder set of 4, at Brilliant Wall Art.

  • Clocks

The industrial style is exemplified by cool clocks! There are many timepieces in this look, why not add one to your living space? The clocks are typically metal or concrete, often with no numbers, choose very simple dials. Brilliant Wall Art have great clocks at affordable prices.

  • Colours

Grey is the colour that dominates industrial decor. Play it safe with grey, black and white keep the style looking clean and effortless. But that’s not to say it has to be boring! Primary colours look great against black and grey – red, bright blue, royal purple, yellow, emerald green and similar.

  • Blending

So you have decided to add industrial style to your home style, but how do you make it blend with what you have now? The answer is…very carefully! In a traditional or country home it is best to add only touches of industrial, but beware of being too harsh or imposing. Always look for ways to merge your design.
It takes a creative and discerning eye to achieve a fabulous industrial look, but the results are worth it! It adds an urban, modern edge to your home that says “chic” like no other style!
Where do I start to transform my room or home into the ideal cutting edge industrial style show home? It’s simple … just shop at brilliant Wall Art.
