Before Queen Victoria‘s reign started in 1837 nobody in Britain had heard of Santa Claus or Christmas Crackers. No Christmas cards were sent and most people did not have holidays from work. The wealth and technologies generated by the industrial revolution of the Victorian era changed the face of Christmas forever.
However, Christmas markets have been part of this festive time for centuries in Germany. They were usually held in front of churches and were looked at as part of a church visit. The oldest recorded market dates to 1310 in Munich, Germany. It was called "Nikolausdult" and was very different from the markets of today. It was an opportunity for farmers to come to town, do some shopping and at the same time, offer their wares.
Many people think that Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was responsible for shaping how Christmas was celebrated by British Victorian families. He was born in Germany. In Germany, evergreen trees were traditionally brought into the home at Christmas time and decorated (with candles, sweets and fruit). In 1848 the royal family were pictured celebrating Christmas around such a decorated tree, and the fashion for Christmas trees spread very quickly from this point on.
At the same time, sentimental “do-gooders” like Charles Dickens wrote books like “Christmas Carol”, published in 1843, which encouraged rich Victorians to redistribute their wealth by giving money and gifts to the poor. These “radical” middle-class ideals eventually spread to the not-quite-so-poor as well.
Today, the Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre is the leading themed street market in the West Midlands. Hundreds of stalls fill the atmospheric streets of Worcester’s historic heart with the colours, sounds and smells of Christmas.
The atmospheric streets of historic Worcester will be filled with sideshows and more than a hundred stalls with all stallholders expected to dress in traditional dress as 19th-century ladies, gents, urchins and chimney sweeps, as well as a few Victorian themed surprises along the way!
