Autumn Daylight Saving Time at Brilliant Wall Art

Considering the recent warm weather one can be excused for not realising that Autumn is already upon us.

However, we were all reminded Sunday 28th October, when most media outlets instructed us all to turn our clocks back at 2am. Britain has returned to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which replaces Daylight Saving Time (DST), otherwise known as British Summer Time (BST).

DID YOU ENJOY YOUR EXTRA HOUR IN BED?

When did Autumn officially start? It does depend upon which calendar you are setting your seasonal clocks by. There are two measurements, the Meteorological Calendar and the Astronomical Calendar. The Meteorological Calendar divides the year into four equal sections (based on our Gregorian calendar), or there is the Astronomical Calendar that ties into the equinoxes and solstices.

Meteorological Autumn

This calendar simply divides each season every three calendar months. This means that the Meteorological Autumn starts on the 1st September and ends on 30th November (September, October, November). The remainder of the seasons are, Spring (March, April, May), Summer (June, July, August) and Winter (December, January, February).

Astronomical Autumn

This year, the Astronomical Calendar decrees that Autumn starts on Sunday 23rd September and finishes on Friday 21st December. This calendar is based around the rotation of the earth and its relation to the obit of the sun, so the dates of the seasons change slightly each year. The Earth's tilt is 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of its orbit and means that, although one revolution of the planet takes 24 hours it is always different relevant to the time of year.

One can always remember which way to turn the dial on your clocks. One simply will, ‘Fall’ back in October and ‘Spring’ forward in March.

DST (or BST in the British Isles) was a concept first developed by the American Benjamin Franklyn as early as the 18th Century. Englishman William Willett, championed the idea in the early 1900’s. William was a builder by trade, who produced a pamphlet in 1907 called The Waste of Daylight. In the publication, he contended that the clocks should be brought forward before the summer to encourage people to get out of bed earlier and enjoy the morning sunlight. However, today supporters of BST reference the road safety benefits for children travelling to school in the daylight rather than the dark, particularly in the north of England and Scotland. Britain eventually adopted DST in May 1916, during the 1st World War.

My Autumn favourite is the unusual and unique Autumn Rope Tree Metal Wall Art. It is created from formed metal, with an aged distressed finish in a rustic shabby chic design. It is embellished with rope detail and a rope trunk, whilst being easy to hang. The metal wall art measures approximately 56cm (22") wide by 75cm (29.5") high.
